What’s great about working at Dentsu Aegis Network?
It's great to work in an organisation where collaboration isn't just a nice to have, it's an absolutely fundamental part of how the organisation is wired. Over my years in the group the most successful people haven't just been talented – they have been curious, open to diverse perspectives and embracing of change.

When you are in a team, what role do you tend to play?
I'm the person who always keeps a sense of where we are going and why – the person who describes the vision and helps encourage everyone to get there!

What do you look for in the people you hire?
When I am looking to hire people I always try to keep in mind that ability and experience can only get you so far – the very best hires are people with fantastic character and an enthusiastic and focused attitude.

What makes a good leader?
A good leader never loses track of where everyone is heading together – along the way they are able to listen, course correct and adapt to circumstances, but never get truly blown offcourse.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I live in an amazing little town in the heart of the South Downs and have an eclectic range of interests, from playing keyboards in a band, to walking in the hills, to looking after a very eccentric elderly chicken.

I have been with Dentsu Aegis Network for 4 years now.  Prior to this, I have experience of working in Financial Services, Consulting and the Utility industry.  I am a HR generalist at heart but I have spent time leading the Employees Relations Function for a leading Bank for a couple of years; this time enabled me to appreciate the different challenges faced across a business from both an employee and manager perspective.  
I have the pleasure of leading a group of talented HR professionals across Dentsu Aegis who strive who support the business in delivering its ambitions for 2020. I am passionate about attracting and developing diverse talent across our business.  The industry that we work in is incredibly exciting and the need to attract diversity of talent is ever more important as we strive to grow our business over the next few years.

I work with an experienced and highly commercial executive management team responsible for the delivery of the combined P&L for the Dentsu Aegis Network offices in Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh. Representing the growing portfolio of Dentsu Aegis Network brands, we manage over 500 pioneering employees focused on expanding the pre-eminent media operation outside of London.

Matthew Platts joined Aegis Media in 1993 as a TV buyer working for BBJ Media Services, the business founded by Jerry Buhlmann. Matthew is responsible for the investment of all clients’ expenditure and trading, and maintaining good relationships with all media owners. Matthew manages the commercial opportunities that exist from the broad scope of services we now provide for our clients, and is accountable for all client contract negotiations. Matthew is also responsible for making sure we use the value we generate from our media owner trading, in order to maximise revenue for our clients. Matthew recently took on the role of President of Amplifi in the UK alongside his existing responsibilities. Amplifi is the media investment arm of Aegis Media.

Describe your job. What’s great about working at Dentsu Aegis Network? 
In my role as CEO of B2B, I get to work across all of our agency brands to evaluate our B2B capabilities, redefine the proposition and drive understanding as to how the digital economy is framing different interactions between businesses. As Executive Sponsor for Brand and Reputation, I help drive cultural change through our D&I agenda and look at how we use the power of difference to make a difference that is better for everyone; our clients and people alike. 

When you are in a team, what role do you tend to play? 
The cheerleader! I would like to think that I provide energy, empathy, humour and I try to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard.

Rick was named CEO of Carat in 2016 following almost three years leading a growing team at creative agency mcgarrybowen, and helping the agency win its first ever Cannes Gold for its work on Honda. Rick’s advertising CV includes many of the most award-winning and creatively respected agencies in London, including Lowe Howard-Spink, Fallon and BBH. Whilst at Fallon in 2005 Rick was recognised as a Campaign ‘Face to Watch’ and launched the multi award-winning Sony ‘like.no.other’ campaign. During his BBH days Rick orchestrated the Barclaycard brand in 2008 and helped Lynx become a $100m brand globally.

Karl Weaver has over 20 years of global experience in marketing effectiveness, having successfully built revenue streams for several businesses in this area.

Most recently he was CEO of Data2Decisions, a business that grew to 150+ people with a presence in 12 markets. Karl facilitated the sale of Data2Decisions to Dentsu Aegis Network to accelerate the scaling of the business as part of a wider group. 

Karl is a member of Dentsu Aegis Global CSR Steering Group, a co-author of numerous award-winning papers including an IPA Effectiveness Grand Prix, has been an IPA judge, an Advisor for the Cannes Effectiveness Lions, a WARC judge and spoken at conferences including Cannes Lions and Media 360.

Dentsu Aegis is made up of very ambitious, energetic and intelligent people. When you’re part of a group like that it raises your game.

When you are in a team, what role do you tend to play?
It varies, but mostly it’s about seeing things strategically and translating to simple, executional tasks. Sometimes I need to be directional and at other times, a gentle nudge is a far more powerful way to lead the team. The leadership of a team is rarely about controlling it – it’s about finding where its energy is and getting people to work as a group in a useful direction.

What do you look for in the people you hire?
We are importantly a people business, so I look for well-rounded, interesting people who want to achieve something both in and outside of work. I also look for people who go after opportunities to grow. People can often achieve more than they think and it is very rewarding to help find the key to realising that potential.

What makes a good leader?
What people want is a leader they know is going to be responsible when it’s the right time to do that. And they hope to get some kind of emotional engagement from their leaders. Odd coming from a data person perhaps, but it comes down to gut feel and intuition.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my family and messing about with cars, driving them around race tracks for fun.

Describe your job? 
At Data2Decisions our purpose is to help clients to grow their businesses through better marketing. My role as Managing Director at Data2Decisions is to ensure that we deliver marketing effectiveness solutions that have real business impact for our clients. In the digital economy, this means helping clients make more informed marketing decisions by simplifying data and providing holistic analytics and optimisation. To achieve this I focus on making sure we have strong and diverse talent, and creating an environment in which people can take risks, try new ideas and celebrate shared success.

When you are in a team, what role do you tend to play?  
It varies depending on the team and the task at hand, but I often play a connecting role to ensure everyone’s voice is heard so that we are always drawing on the talent of individuals as well as the team.

What do you look for in the people you hire? 
An ideal hire is someone who can tell a compelling story with data, identify opportunity and partner with clients to help realise that opportunity. So a balance of statistics, communication and commercial acumen is the Holy Grail.

A clear vision, effective communication and the ability to foster collaboration. A good leader is someone who can build a diverse team where every individual feels valued for their unique perspective and approach so they can reach their full potential.   

What do you enjoy doing outside of work? 
I have a very energetic two year old daughter, so my weekends usually involve a combination of the park, soft play, kids’ parties and plenty of Peppa Pig!

Describe your job.
I’m the CEO of John Brown Media. Although London-based, I’m responsible for our global offices and the creative output of that work. We have offices in Boston, Dubai, Hong Kong, Cape Town and Johannesburg. I currently travel at least two weeks every month, visiting our offices or meeting new people within Dentsu Aegis Network and looking at potential opportunities. My main job is to maintain the John Brown culture in every global market, looking after the people who work for us and ensuring our clients are consistently getting world-class content.

What’s great about working at Dentsu Aegis Network?
John Brown Media was recently acquired by Dentsu Aegis Network. In this time everybody I have met has been extremely welcoming and willing to help in any way they can, such as housing our new John Brown Media staff in the Boston office of iProspect. One of the things I love about Dentsu Aegis Network is the speed with which everybody works, something that I find very energising.

When you are in a team, what role do you tend to play?
Running an agency means that I’m a bit of a chameleon so it depends on the circumstances and the audience. Internally at John Brown Media as the CEO, my role is to lead, give direction and mentor the four amazing women who run our global offices – Libby Kay in the UK, Lani Carstens in South Africa, Claire England in Dubai and Lucy Dryburgh in Hong Kong. As part of the Dentsu Aegis Network Management team in the UK I listen and learn, and contribute as much as possible. Describe Dentsu Aegis Network in three words. World of opportunity.

What do you look for in the people you hire?
In no particular order, but equally important: energy, intelligence and warmth. I’m always looking to hire the very best people available, much smarter than me (not very difficult if you know me). A sense of humour is important.

What makes a good leader?
The best leaders set an example for others to follow. You have to work harder than everybody else, be a great communicator both internally and externally and understand what motivates each person who works for you - and then motivate them. Set the highest possible standards in everything you do, both as a business and as an individual. Be approachable to all your staff and be prepared to answer any question openly and honestly.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Despite travelling two weeks a month for work, I love travelling with my wife and two teenage sons. We have had amazing trips to Japan, Burma, China and Indonesia. When I’m not travelling I’m very happy at home watching a movie and I’m a big Tottenham fan – so not much joy there. I used to love eating but considering most of the people I have met at Dentsu Aegis are thinner than me, I have been on a no-carb diet for the last two months. Fortunately it’s working, so far.

What’s your hidden talent?
Neil Diamond and Elton John Karaoke specialist.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
I manage Harpenden U12 cricket team.

There is a palpable sense of collaboration and wanting to get stuff done. Results are paramount but never at the expense of quality. 

When you are in a team, what role do you tend to play?
I love the expression ‘always employ people more intelligent than you’ and with that in mind if I can get those super-talented people to work together to produce great work, I’m happy.

We are a people-powered business so life-skills, attention to detail and patience are critical.

The ability to listen and make others heard. 

Where have you worked before and what did you do?
My first job out of University was New Media Manager for EMI Records and I had the honour of being the first person plugged into the internet and get a colour monitor. It makes me feel very old. 

Tell us something surprising about yourself?
It’s not surprising but sales is so intrinsic in this industry that I once pitched for an hour to what I thought was a hot lead. He had actually visited to measure up the new door. 

What’s your hidden talent?
I play drums. My wife likes me to keep that hidden. 

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Windsurfing when the weather is nice, a nice red with good friends, being a nerd in my home studio.

I lead the Group’s Out-of-Home media specialists (Posterscope, PSI, Open Outdoor & Liveposter) and its experiential marketing, sports & entertainment business, MKTG. What makes working here great is the energy, talent and ambition of its people. Internal politics really don’t get in the way which leads to a dynamic and highly innovative culture.

I tend to keep meetings focused and ensure that a clear, actionable outcome is reached.

Every day is different except for the fact that its mobile centric!
